Give Today to “Save St. John Point”
Thank you for your interest in supporting the Save St. John Point initiative – an unprecedented collaboration between a local BC land trust, the Mayne Island Conservancy Society (MICS) and our US charity, American Friends of Canadian Land Trusts (American Friends). Our two organizations – led by talented, dedicated, experienced conservation professionals and volunteers from both the US and Canada – are working to protect this very special coastal property just north of the US border, in British Columbia. We invite you to be part of our bi-national effort to save a gem in the Salish Sea – the waters that we share.
St. John Point is one of only a handful of large, privately-owned, undeveloped parcels in the Southern Gulf Islands that feature over a mile of shoreline. The property is a high priority for acquisition because of those characteristics, and the quality and unusual nature of the forest. Preserving the forest is very important both because there is so little Coastal Douglas Fir habitat remaining (of which 80% is on private property) and to prevent subdivision into six lots, as allowed by the zoning.
If we succeed in purchasing St. John Point it will be permanently protected and publicly accessible, so that its beauty can be enjoyed for generations to come. Your contribution to American Friends will help us achieve this goal and will be fully tax deductible in the US. American Friends and MICS must raise $4.3 million CAD to acquire St. John Point, pay the transaction costs and create an appropriate stewardship fund. A substantial percentage of that amount will come from government sources. We urgently need to raise $2 million CAD in the next few months from individuals, corporations and foundations in order to secure the property and access the other funds.
